Everyone has a reason for the things they do. Sometimes it can be several reasons. Speaking for myself, I have three reasons for writing.
So, exactly why do I sit at a computer everyday pushing out words?
#1: It’s my God given talent: We’re all given a gift that we’re meant to pursue. For me it’s writing. I think that explains my longevity in this industry: it will be 19 years this summer.
#2: It’s my livelihood: For some people writing is a hobby. This has never been the case for me. Whether it’s copywriting, blogging, writing press releases or stories, writing has always been a business for me. And I’m very thankful that it keeps me out of the most dreadful place: the unemployment line.
#3: Honestly, I enjoy it: Few people enjoy their careers today. I can honestly say that I’m not one of those people, and I consider myself very blessed not to be. I love telling stories.
Now, I must confess that I didn’t like copywriting. It was very, very stressful! It’s the kind of career that burns you out quickly. While some clients are a joy; others can be a real pain. Not to mention some of the stuff you write is just plain boring.
Then again, I’m a storyteller. I truly love telling stories; bringing fictional characters to life for people to either love or hate. I can best sum this up by saying that writing is my livelihood, but fiction is my heart.
So, these are the three reasons why I write.
